I have just managed to defeat the DK in the basement of Durlags Tower after many attempts. I thought that I would share my strategy in case anybody else is struggling:
Choose one of your party to be the bait for the DK - I chose Imoen. Then as you come down the stairs into the circular room move the bait around the edge until they are far away from the rest of the team. Next, get you party ready by hasting them, protecting them from magic etc. When you are ready, have the bait approach the DK, as soon as he unleashes the 'dispel magic' at the bait have the rest of the team attack him. Your team should have been unaffected by the 'dispel magic' and be able to kick his ass without sustaining any casualties.

I like the overwheming numbers method.

Have your Cleric cast at 2 *Animate Dead* and place them on 2 sets of stairs b4 speaking to you know who, stealth+haste your thief have him/her break the mirror, run awy.
Range weapons and when your help is about finished, Fireball (it will kill the rest of your help so be carefull) if he's still alive he wont have much left. Or animte more dead or get your mage to call for some help. Nasty but affective.
The dead are cannon fodder to slow

<font color="cyan">Ahh, the DemonKnight.

I cast the buffer spells (Haste, Chant, Defensive Harmony),drank the potions (potion of power, potion of x strength), and had two archers (theif and ranger) perched on the circle outcrop above, both equipped with arrows of biting.

I cast fireball on the DK as my party aproached, flaming him just before my party came near.

I charged in with my two tanks, (Khalid and Minsc), had the two archers attack, and cast spells with my Cleric and my Mage.

He went down in the end, but he did do some damage to the tanks in melee!!!</font>

I did manage to kill the DK on an earlier try but I wasnt sure that the scripts in the game would have been activated correctly. Basically, I had Branwen cast silence in the general vicinity of the DK before he noticed my party. I then moved in and killed him easily.

However, I was unsure if this would cause problems because he had not had a chance to start his dialogue script before he was silenced. Any thoughts on this?

PS When I went back to try this tactic again he kept saving vs magic!!!!

The last 2 times I took him down I don't think any of my guys got hurt at all, and I didn't use any offensive spells, either.

All I cast were Bless and Chant, each of which grant the party +1 to their attack rolls (I don't know if it's cumulative or not, but better safe than sorry), and Haste. I equipped ranged weapons on everybody and spread my party out among the tops of the 4 stairways, with my Tank by himself. I send my Tank down to start the dialogue, and when the DK fires a Dispel Magic, my Tank runs away, and with Haste and the Boots of Speed, he's well out of range of the Dispel. Then everybody takes a few steps down the stairs and starts firing away. The DK tries to cast some stuff, but he's got a crappy AC, so with Hasted archers firing from 4 directions, he's not gonna live long enough to get much off. Poor guy. Kinda anticlimactic, really.

<font color="cyan">But he isn't the climax. Did you find Mr.Letec easy??

Well, the DK's the climax of Durlag's, proper, but he's easy if you try different strategies. My trick for Aec'Letec was to have my Tank get in his face FAST, so the Death Gaze only affects the member of my party with the best Saving Throws (in the last 2 run-throughs, a Dwarf and a Paladin). The rest of my party picks off the Cultists, who oblige me by standing there like idiots, and by the time they're done my Tank is almost dead, so my subsitute Tank needs to step up while we all finish sending Aec back to the Abyss

Wouldn't it have been easier to use the potion of mirrored eyes to ward off the demons death gaze?
