Well hello everyone! just got a brand spanking new comp and it kicks major ass! only one prob: those idiots 4got to put in a sound card, damn them! so now i have to suffer playing ToB with no sound . Anyways, i usually play a female fighter/mage who dual wields Spectral Band and Twinkle. But i decided in honor of my new computer to try a sorc(or a sorcerer, we call em sorcs in Lord of Destruction)and i really like how the sorcs get their spells, i mean, u get to choose them, which is pretty bad-ass, and u get to use them up to six times without memorization(six each spell lvl). So i want ur opinions, mages or sorcs? (no dual/multi-classes)

As someone who has made it to ToB, you should have a good gauge of which spells see more use, and which ones waste space in the spellbook. This knowledge allows you to pick which spells you need the most, making the sorcerer very dangerous. I would encourage you, however, to have at least one mage (even multiclassed) to back you up, to cast the spells that you don't have in case you need them. |
Both are perfectly good classes, each with its strengths and drawbacks. As Nerull mentioned, having run through the game once, you should have a better idea of what spells a sorc should pick, and which to avoid. You'll know about items (like the Glasses of Identification) and wands (like those of Summoning and Fire) which pretty much render acquiring those spells as a sorc a waste of some good spell slots.

Load up on the dispelling, peirce magic, spell strike, lower resistance, malison type spells. You need them badly and being able to cast them multiple times makes mages sweat! Avoid low level illusionary spells (mirror image) as almost all enemy mages use true sight right off the bat. Keep offensive spells simple. Magic missile, Fireball, Horrid Wilting

Things like Spell Sequencer & Spell Trigger probably deserve a mention as well--but then again, once you get Improved Alacrity (and the Amulet of Power & the Robe of Vecna), do they really matter?
IMHO, Sorcerors are decent, but I'm much more a fan of the versatility of Dual- and Multi- classes. You want REAL casting power? I've got a Cleric/Mage, Levels 24/20, with stats of 19/19/17/20/23/21. (The STR is from a Girdle, but all the others are innate.) Dayum. |
A sorcerer is most powerful.
I have become quite fond of my sorcerer character. If your character is Elven, he or she will innately be immune to sleep and one other spell classification. find dundee slaytern's list of solo and party sorcerer spells, he has some very insightful points to make about them. |
The sorcerer is a great addition in your party since he cankeep some spells comming and comming. He is not as versatile as a wizard, but this can be made up for by the usage of scrolls and wads/staffs etc.
The sorcerer have the same restrictions as wizards, though one thing really bothers me, I like to make dual classed characters espacially magic classed characters. To give them a couple of fighter levels so they don“tget harrassed by the first goblin when their spells runs out. Well well, I have had lots of fun with a sorcerer in the party. Great for addition when battling other wizards. The selection of speels is a very important matter though, you know fewer spells and thus you have to choose wisely. A couple of protection, antimagic stuff, large area bombastic ones, and the individual or party aiding ones. |
after all, there's lots of mages in the game but there's no sorceror, you'll have a mage in your party already and as an addition a sorceror is a great idea

If u want to be a mage, you have to get lots of spells that aid
your party members, whereas a scorceror needs power spells which weaken and damage the enemy.. Necromancer's still my fave...oh dear god if only they could make a specialist scorceror! |
