Please, no ToB spoilers.

From what I have read in FAQs, after 20th level, level advancement brings much fewer rewards. HPs are all controlled, THAC0 stops improving, even spell progressions slow down. Furthermore, special abilities start occuring at a certain xp level not character level, which means that multi-classes start getting their special abilities at lower level. Also, the multis get another ability each time they level up in either class. With this in mind, what is the advantage to playing a single classed fighter or thief compared to a multi fighter/thief other than slow level advancement?

Edit: furthermore, grandmastery is nerfed in BG2 so it's not as cool as it was before.

There is a patch to restore Grandmastery to its' previous status at this location.

besides the initial loss of average hit points, multi does seem to have an edge.

special abilities kick in after 3 million xp, whether single or multi.
