Haven't tried backstabbing yet. Does it work? Any comments appreciated.

Backstabbing is one of the coolest things in the game. Your thief must be in stealth mode, i.e., 'hiding in shadows' and he must be behind the target (with ToSC installed, that is). You can only use weapons that are suitable for a backstab. For a thief those include dagger, short sword, and longsword. A cleric-thief can backstab with a club, quarterstaff (including the staff mace), or magical weapon such as Shillelagh and Spiritual Hammer (Shillelagh is better).

Would it be wrong to say that a thief can backstab with any melee eapon he can wield?

I think its right

But be careful with fighter-thiefs, they can backstabb only with thief weapons (not with two handed swords or spears or anything else)

Plus as you level up, your backstab rating goes higher (damage done).

And then there is the best theif sword in the game:

Short Sword of Backstabbing. :D
