well, i seem to have solved my problems
first the "no dialogue and text" bug:
uninstall, reinstall (with patches)
then i had these random freezes and the screen turning greenish:
uninstalled
installed SoA, installed patch
installed ToB, installed patch
left the "ai" something update to 30 per sec.
turned off 3d acceleration

don't know which of the above fixed the damn thing (maybe it was a prob with my voodoo2, but then again, SoA made no probs), but at least there are no freezes or the green screen, and, i still use third party custom items
hope someone finds this usefull
