I happened to chance upon some red wizards standing in some old ruin...east of Beregost and Nashkell...and surely they kick¤&ed my butt...Now since I´ve played this game for some time I really want to get even so here the question, does anybody out there know of a cool way to dispense with these guys....and do they have some cool items...Edwin has been whining about me getting more robes and stuff for him...?

Sparhawk, ovecome with grief, knocked Martel on the top of his shield and leveled a Fireball at the resurrected Martel!

A possible spoiler for those who read onward.
I remember the wizards you're talking about and although it was quite
awhile ago, I killed them with exploding bottles and a wand of fireball. I don't recall them having anything worth while, but the head honcho wizard who spoke with me, even though I managed to kill him I had to run away and rest. So when I came back, his stuff was gone so I don't know if he had anything good, but the other wizards only had robes, gold and staffs.

Dunno 'bout a cool way besides hitting them with a wand of frost but an easy way to rid the coast of their evil schemes is

a) Stinking cloud
b) Fireball
c) Web and Entangle

Then just sit back and fire darts/arrows/bolts/magic missiles at them.
I'll leave it to you to see what they have ;)

Edwin is a Thayan Red Wizard himself, so if he is in the party as soon as the head wizard, Denak (?), speaks the other three Red Wizards disappear and Denak won't attack you. You have to act fast if you want to kill him before he scoots off.

ahaaaa.....I´ve just pcked edwin up ti do battle with them, I might think about leaving him behind then...but then I wouldn´t be able to throw spells at them *frown...thinking hard*
Any suggestions...are there any better mages in BG1ToSC that Edwin...and NO I really hate the bloke with the moonblade!

Sparhawk emptied the can of Beer and wiped the foam of his chin

Also if you have TotSC installed you can dual class Imoen as a mage at level 7 thus getting her thief abilities back near the end of the game

How about Xzar? He's less trouble to go and get than Dyna. Plus he's only subbing until Edwin returns.

An (almost too) easy way to win this battle:

If you have cleric with level 3 spells cast Animate Dead before approaching, then hit 'em with Stinking Cloud and send in the skellies as you pummel them with arrows, Magic Missile, Melf's, etc.

You might want to try something more challenging than this, as monster or skeleton summoning really is an unbalancing capability. (That is, you can destroy any monsters that are ever summoned against you--rare as that is--almost within seconds; yet on the other hand the enemy seems to labor forever against the ones you create for them to fight--and the enemy totally ignores you while so doing!) But if you get stuck this is almost shockingly easy.

If you have DSOTSC installed then killing the Red Wizards is a MUST. One of them has a UBER mage robe (usable only by evil allignment IIRC). I always take Edwin in my parties so I just make sure the Wizards (or at least the talking one) all dead before the head-wizard gets a chance to talk to me. Its supreme munchkinism I know, but thats what DSOTSC is all about :D

Cast 'minor globe of invulnerability' (level 4 mage spell) on yourself and walk up to the group alone (leave your party behind for now). Then enjoy the moment as they discover that all of their spells are completely wasted on you. I did this, and it worked marvellously ;)
