Which version of DirectX do you have?
What's the cache size of the game?
Did you do a full install?

try these things:

1) You could be low on memory (not hard drive space, which is completely different). If you have a lot of programs running in the background, it will slow things up. Before you run Baldur's Gate, close as many programs as you can in your system tray (those are the icons by your clock).

2) Look in your startup folder on your start menu, and see if "fast find" is there. If it is, remove it. It is a useless resource hog commonly included with microsoft office.

The Diablo expansion may have installed an older DLL or directX driver in its install. W98 - use System Information and Direct X Diagnostic Tool, under Accessories/System Tools/System Information - Tools menu. See if there are any mismatched numbers. Maybe you could reinstall or restore it if they are different...
