just a little stupid question. What does it mean that it has gone gold?

A program goes gold when it is done with the development stage. The programmers and everyone give the game their final blessing before shipping it to the stores. When this is done, the game goes "gold". This is not to say that the game is perfect, but they feel that it is far enough along for retail customers to make work on a variety of different system configurations.
