I just met up with Imoen again in spellhold, and I swaped out Jan for her and Then my only choice was to tell him to wait right there. I can't remember what happens here. Can I continue on with Imoen or what happens to the guy I leave behind?

If you drop a character for Imoen, that character will wait in Spellhold, and you'll lose him/her.

The only character who can make it out of Spellhold without you is Imoen. If you drop her, she'll make it back to Amn and wait for you in the Copper Coronet (but you won't make it back until Chapter 6).

Man, Thats rough... I never used Imoen that much and I was planning to use her this time, and now I have to toss someone aside for good... That blows...

I noticed in my current game at this point that Mazzy offered to leave the party on her 'test of faith' in order to make way for Imoen. Not sure if that means she'd make it back to the surface by herself or not though....anyone?

Having a decidedly 'un-Imoen' disposition, I kept with the party I had and told Imoen to meet me at the Copper Coronet. I've always thought the game seems to slightly drag on a little between the Asylum dungeons and the time it takes to get back to the surface in order for any party dynamic changes.

My understanding is that Jaheira will also return to Amn. So it's Imoen or Jaheira. Not Jan though.

Try it next time. Jaheira waits in Spellhold.

I think it all depends on where you are with the romances (if anywhere). I do believe that Jahiera, by default, will say something about heading over to the Haper base if you haven't done any romances.. though I haven't done it in the Underdark.
