I do not see the icon "lock" that you click when you want the thief to unlock box,door etc.
I click on find trap but do not know how to remove the trap.
Am I missing something in the software? I have downloaded a patch

Once you find a trap (it will be hilighted in red), click on the icon that sort of looks like glasses or something. Once you select that icon, click on the red area and your thief will attempt to disarm the trap. The same icon is used to unlock chests.

Am I right in thinking I should make sure I go thru all doors etc before going to the next level,are there any places that are hard to find?

I player BG years ago and when you got a magic wand it lasted for a while. I noticed that in this game you use once and its gone

Different magic items have different properties - including numbers of charges. Some wands have 1, others have 40 or even more.

Exploration is your friend - but save often! There's always the possibility that you'll stumble onto something that you can't handle at your current experience level.

just press the 'q' button often, its the quick save defalt
