hey everyone, just a quick question

what is the deal with gaining weapon proficiencies for a fighter in BG and BG2?

A fighter (single class) will start the game (BG) with 4 proficiency points. You can then place two points in the weapons of your choice. A fighter will gain one point every 3 levels. You can spend this point in any weapon proficiency that you want. The maximum points that a fighter can gain in one weapon is 5 (grandmastery). After that you will have to put any further gained points in another weapon class.

Just to clarify JR's post, that means that you will gain another point at levels 3, 6, 9 etc.

Also, you should be aware that in BG2 you have weapon styles as well i.e. weapon and shield, single weapon etc. You can place two points in most of these styles, but 'two-weapon style' allows you to place three points.
