HI, i was just wondering if anyone could give me some hints on how to beat degardan in the umar hills, thanks

'Scuse me but who's Degardan? I can't recall anyone with that name, especially in the Umar Hills.

Is it a Ranger stronghold quest?

that might explain why I can't remember him, haven;t done them since my first run through the game

Isn´t he Valygars bouncer? Some elven wimp you may end up beating before you find the man himself?

Either that, or he might be some of those "pop-up" people who tend to appear somewhere nearby when you wake up in the wilderness...
A harper maybe?

I think Degarden is part of the trio of Rangers guarding Valygar.

While it would help to know what party members you have with you (and I hope you have room for Valygar, IMO the best killing machine in the game) the basics of kicking backside is the same.

Buff yourself up, and max out your summons, (skeletons work good here.) Try approaching so only the first (Degarden) speaker appears. After the initial dialog (you do have an option to resolve things peacefully but why waste a perfectly good opportunity to collect valuable XP and a few nice pieces of equipment?) he will turn red. Back up your speaker and have your mage send off a fireball to soften them up a bit. Make sure you keep a tight reign on your summons while the fire ball is going off, you don’t want crispy critters just yet. Have your archers pelt the spell caster in the back, not Degarden, it is more important to interrupt the spell castings than getting rid of front line fighters. Once the fireball is done have your summons occupy Degarden and possibly one fighter deal with the second ranger type so they are forced into melee rather than rely on their ranged weapons, get everyone else to gang up on the spell caster. Don’t be afraid to use up your magic missiles and Melf’s acid arrows on the spell caster, you want this one to go down and go down hard. Keep potions of healing handy and you may want to call up another batch of summons when your first batch gets crushed.

He comes to make Edwina back into Edwin, at which point you do battle. That should help people post more accurate strategies.
