Welcome Master Ranger.

Hmm, I'm not usually a ranger, but I'd have to say Composite Long Bow is his best weapon. Especially if it is a magic one like +1. Equip this bow with the best arrows you can lay your hands on, and your away.

As to armour, I can't remember his restrictions as I don't usually use them (Except Kivan), but I think he can use Full Plate Mail, therefore +1. (I mite be wrong on this, I cant really remember). It's worth a shot.

As to items, i cant think of any that are just for Rangers.

Well, Full Plate Mail, Ring of Protection +2, Boots of Avoidance, Gauntlets of Archery, Composite Bow +1 (forgot if there's a better one), Helm of Balduran, good arrows...

But you are just picking good items, if you gave all them to your Ranger, the rest of your party could be at a disadvantage. Don't forget, spread out your items evenly.

Well, best items for a ranger :D . But, you're right. The ranger probably won't need the Ring of Protection +2 and can do with just a Plate Mail, since he (hopefully) won't be up front in melee. Those items, as well as the Helm of Balduran, should go to your tanks. Ranger needs Gauntlets of Archery, good bow, good arrows... and decent armor and melee weapon in case he gets caught in melee.

For Baldur's Gate 1, treat the ranger as a specialised warrior, that is, not as good in close combat as the paladin or the fighter but still not bad.
There are no powerful ranger-only items in BG1, but you can use most of what fighters can.

But you'll have to decide how you prefer to use your ranger in order to pick the best equipment.

If you want him/her to act as a fighter, full plate, or ankegh plate, are good, especially when combined with a handweapon +1 or +2 and a shield (large shield +1, +4 vs. missiles is a good one, for example)

On the other hand, if you want to use the ranger as an archer, take light armour (none, hide, leather, or studded leather), a composite longbow (preferably a magical one) and a doublehanded weapon (like Spider's Bane if you can spare it). also consider giving the ranger the boots of speed.

The reasons for this are simple, by giving the ranger light armour, he/she can still hide in the shadows to escape from nasty situations. The bow, of course, is what you use for shooting, while the boots help to keep you out of close combat. The reason for the doublehanded weapon is that you cannot use a shield anyway as long as you have the bow equipped, so you might as well give your shields to others and have your ranger wield the big weapons.

Bracers of archery are also a good help, as they improve your chance to hit with a bow.

But you won't get most of these items until you're farther into the game, so until then, just use the ranger as a fighter if you can.

I disagree Legolas, Rangers shouldnt be used as Fighters, just ranged attackers. ;)

rangers are fighters no long range attackers thay are berserkers (minsc and everybody's favoriete hamster boo)
and im far in the game earned a lot of money with killing mages and sell there items or use them myself also i got al lot of money

no wonder i am a fallen ranger

and after that go to the curch and give them money so you wont get bounty hunters that want you dead

and does someone knows some rich guys to kill or pick pocket http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...ons/icon10.gif

You actually sound happy about being a Fallen Ranger....why?

It's true--all the items in BG1 that a Fighter can use are also usable by Rangers, and vice versa. But there is one item that really lends itself to a Ranger--the Mithril Chainmail+4, because it does not block Thieving skills (Rangers can Stealth, Bards can Pick Pockets, Fighter/Thieves can use all their skills).

Fighters, Paladins & Rangers can all be very versatile, depending on which weapons you had them learn and what you're using them for. If they're your Tank, go ahead & give them the best helm, shield, and armor/ring combo you've got....if using them as an archer, either the Long+1, Composite Long+1, or Longbow of Accuracy, and a good Halberd or 2-handed sword, plus some decent armor, and watch the fur fly. Rangers are actually a bit better used as archers than Tanks, because the Elven Ranger kicks so much ass, but the Elf's 17 CON lowers your hitpoints.

Lavindathar 01-08-2002 01:51 PM

Yeah, Elven archer rangers totally kick ass. Kivan proves that point.

Six - "the Mithril Chainmail+4" is a very good point, I hadn't thought about Ranger's stealth ability, so I didn't think of that. Well done!!
