What happens to Minsc when he goes 'berserk'? It seems like everytime I have him do this he ends up turning on my own party attacking.

He goes crazy. :D When he goes Beserk just put him away from your party.

I'm confused---during a battle, I can select to have Minsc 'berserk'; I've read in the manual that it increase his ability to fight. However, almost every time, he fights well for a while and then he turns on my party. Why does this happen? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?

I've used beserk alot and he's never turned on my party. Since I can't controlhim I keep my others away. Usualy he fights the enemy and then dies. I revive him and go on.

When you're in a berserk state you'll attack anything. Usually that means enemies, but if there are none around, that might mean party members.

In BG1 I was able to control Minsc in his berserk state by playing a bardsong at the same time. I don't know if this will work in BG2, but it's worth testing.

It's because he goes crazy for a short while. He'll attack anything that moves (well, basically. ;) ) until the beserk state is done. The only way to prevent it, AFAIK, is not to use it.
