<font color=plum>I have downloaded IEEP onto my PC in an attempt to learn to make my own items and spells, but when I open the zipped file and start the installation, I get several different error messages.

When I first start to unzip the file, I get this message:

<font color=dodgerblue>The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?</font> <font color=cyan>Yes</font>

After completing the installation, it asks if I want to run IEEP. When I click Yes I get the following series of messages:

<font color=dodgerblue>There has been an error reading the GAME DIR section at the IEEP initilization file. Therefore the rest of the Official Game Directory section will be skipped and the initilization file will continue to be read.</font> <font color=cyan>OK</font>

<font color=dodgerblue>There has been an error in the program. The specific information is:
Component 'COMDLG32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid at IEEP_ini_READ.02.01.</font> <font color=cyan> OK</font>

<font color=dodgerblue>Would you like IEEP to try and find the paths to any Infinity Engine game present by Searching the Registry?</font> <font color=cyan>Yes</font>

<font color=dodgerblue>Run-time error '339':
Component 'COMDLG32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.</font> <font color=cyan>OK</font>

I've also downloaded some zipped files for non-standard items to add to the game and I get a lot of the same messages when I try to install them into the game. I downloaded both of these zip files into the Black Isle folder, but placed them in a folder seperate from the SoA files. Should I place them in a completely seperate file from Black Isle? Or should I be putting them straight into the SoA file?

Any advice or suggestions on how to get the IEEP up and running would be greatly appreciated.</font>

1. "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" is just one of those MS security checks meaning your file has no valid MS certificate. You can ignore it if you "trust" the source of your file or your virus checker.

2. COMDLG32.OCX is a Windows system component containing a lot of the system´s dialogs. I don´t think it´s really missing because otherwise a lot of your other progs wouldn´t run too. But if you want to check look for "COMDLG32.OCX" in your registry.

Did you unzip the whole package to some directory before starting the installation ? Most installers are not able to install "directly" from a zip file, e.g. just opening the zip file with WinZip and then double-clicking into the file list is not enough.

Sorry, sounds like the link I gave you was to a dodgy copy. I've hosted the one I'm using - its guaranteed to be error free

Ah, forgot about Service Pack 2 - it's such a pain! There is no installation necessary however, simply extract the files and run the .exe

Your comgld32.ocx should be residing in your windows/system32 folder. If it is missing (not sure if that's possible or not) you can download mine here:

http://colin.htid.net/comdlg32.ocx

Try just dumping it into the Inf Explorer directory - that should fix it. I would hesitate before putting my file into your system folder though...

Cerek, I had similar errors getting IEEP to run. I had to DL Visual Basic 6(it's an ActiveX thingy, sorta). You can get it here...
http://www.clandlan.net/index.php?file=tbgmirror.htm
The DL is close to the top, in the paragraph above the IEEP DL. Hope this helps.

<font color=plum>Thanks for the new link, <font color=lime>shamrock</font>, that did the trick. That version of IEEP worked fine. But I'm still getting a series of the very same error messages when I try to add some non-standard item files to the game. These items are TLP files and - when I click on the installation icon - they try to access the IEEP software. I then get a different series of the same error messages I was getting with my IEEP installation.

Ignoring the error about the "unknown publisher", I listed 4 error messages in my opening post. When I try to install one of these non-standard files, I get the following sequence of error messages.

<font color=dodgerblue>Message#1 (There has been an error reading GAME DIR)
Message#2 (Component COMDLG32.OCX missing)
Message#3 (Would I like IEEP to find other paths to Infinity Engine software)
Message#2 (Component COMDLG32.OCX missing)
Message#1 (There has been an error reading GAME DIR)
Message#2 (Component COMDLG32.OCX missing)
Message#4 (Run time error 339)</font>

I had hoped that getting a working version of IEEP would have corrected this problem also, but it did not. I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions about how to fix this problem also.

Thanks for all of your help.</font>

Install the TBG VB6 runtime - it includes some files that IEEP depends on. Elfbane linked to it.

<span style="color: lightblue">Or get a real editor. IEEP is not only outdated (essentially superceded by DLTCEP), it has a generally wierd interface (Which can't be changed), and, last I checked, will refuse to read any files that are in BIFs: meaning you have to extract them yourself if you want to work on them (and generally, the best way to make an item is to copy an existing one and edit it out of recognition). Near Infinity fixes both of these problems: it has a pseudonormal Interface, with some limited ability to skin, and handles BIFs transparently.

<font color=plum>That's a good suggestion, <font color=lightblue>LennonCook</font>, but the items files search for the IEEP software. If I don't have it on the PC, then the files won't work at all.

<font color=white>andrewas</font> - I do have VB6 on my PC, but I'll download the latest version just to make sure I have the most recent one.</font>

<span style="color: lightblue">Umm.. what type of files are these? I think you're reading a little too much into what Windows Explorer claims to know: if they're *ITM, Near Infinity will do you just as well. Just open them from within near infinity, rather than from Windows Explorer. Or set the Win Explorer file association to open them in NI.

<font color=plum>There are 3 files in the zipped file. Two are text documents and one is a TLP file. The text documents are the ReadMe file and a "Cheat" file that gives you the item code if you want to use CLUAConsole to put the item in the game.

The TLP file is the actual item file. When you click on it, it automatically seeks the IEEP software and tries to install the item file into the game through the IEEP software. If the TLP file is not successfully installed, then CLUAConsole will not work because it says "that item file does not exist".

All of these items were downloaded from <font color=lime>Arundors Abode</font> and I have successfully installed many items from there. But now I'm suddenly having lots of problems. It could be a problem with the item files themselves, since some of them do work and some of them don't. But I just want to find a way to get all of them working.

Of course, the other option is to download the editor you mentioned and then just try to create my own version of the same items and introduce them that way.

Still, any other suggestions about working with the items I already have would be greatly appreciated.

Should I erase the files I have and just try to download them again now that I have a working copy of IEEP? When I downloaded them before, I placed them into a separate folder inside the SoA folder. Should I put them in a completely different folder, or does that make a difference?

As always, thanks for your help.</font>
