If you have SotM equipped you are invisible. If you throw blue spell (Blur, Mirror Image) you stay invisible. If you cast white spell (Wish, Dispel Magic) you become visible as soon as you start casting it and the same rule applies to all the red spells except Time Stop and Improved Alacrity. Do you think that this is a bug or implemented on purpose?

its the same with clerics and casting sanctuary. invisibility is dispelled when any offensive action is taken (white spells are offensive because they remove things like invisibility {true sight} and protections {dispel magic})

i don't know why time stop doesn't interupt it though. maybe its to give liches an advantage.

Xen 08-21-2004 03:18 PM

That`s why I`m asking this. Is it a bug or it was meant to be that way?

Shadow015 08-21-2004 03:51 PM

My guess is that it's a bug. Time Stop and Improved Alacrity, even though they don't actually harm the enemy, are undeniably offensive in nature; as such, they should break the invisibility.

Thrain 08-21-2004 04:30 PM

but theres no way to hard code it so liches can cast time stop when invisible and you cant. and as they're meant to be the most dangerous mages in the game aside from jonny boy...

ElfBane 08-21-2004 07:34 PM

Actually, I think that Kangaxx is more challenging than Jonny boy. The worst thing about Jonny is......

The way I look at it, doesn't matter if it's a bug or an intentional decision. If it's a bug, then it is a cheesy exploit that was not meant to be in the game. If it's intentional, then it's a cheesy exploit the developers conceeded to include. In any case I don't allow my mages to carry around the power of infinite invisiblity, and that is an intentional decision on the player's part. It's your choice.

Neo the Warrior Cat 08-21-2004 11:33 PM

This invisibilty can be dispelled or True Sighted so it's hardly infinite.

Dron_Cah 08-22-2004 12:23 AM

er, Hank, that's a pretty big spoiler there, you should proly edit, or take it out. ;)

Really? What spoiler would that be? Hank doesn't seem to have stated anything beyond what Xen posted in the very first sentence of the thread, "If you have SotM equipped you are invisible." In any case, I'm about to step beyond that by stating that so far Xen has only scratched the surface of the SotM cheese.</font>
  • Infinite Invisibility. Sure, it can be Dispelled or True Sighted, but all you have to do is re-equip the Staff. Enemy wastes a spell slot, you lose nothing. You don't even have to risk failing a Hide in Shadows roll.</font>
  • Permanent Invisibility. Casting defensive spells will not break the Invisibility, but casting white or red spells will....unless you start casting your spell, immediately Pause, then go into your Inventory and reequip the Staff. You will remain Invisible for the duration of the casting, no matter what it does.</font>
  • Waste Enemy Spells for free. Walk up to any enemy spellcaster except a Lich, Dragon, or Kou-Toa. Let him start to cast a spell at you, then reequip your Staff. Oh, darn, the bad guy can't finish his spell because his target's disappeared. I wonder if he'll keep doing that over and over until all his spells are gone?</font>
What do *I* use the Staff of the Magi for? Precisely this much: Permanent PfEvil and -2 bonuses to Saves and AC, the Spell Trap every now and then, and the Fireball-Lightning when I feel like it. I also use it like a stack of Invisibility Potions: If my Mage needs to duck out of sight, he can, but that's the only thing he can do in that round. Essentially, the Staff frees up a Quickslot.
