Today, I encountered the virus "my doom". Now I am unable to retrieve my saved game. When I start-up, I can get to the saved games screen, and the game time that I have been playing is visible(days , hours, etc), however in the slots where my party members are supposed to be, there is nothing. Also on the same screen in the larger slot on the left, I have the game symbol (the lady's head w/ helmet). Usually this shows a small picture of your party in the position in which the game was saved. I have been playing for awhile and I am on the verge of going to chapter 3. Is there any way that I can recover my saved game?

um, if you've got a virus, then just run an anti-virus program to get rid of it.

I ran a virus scan immediately, and cleaned everything up, however I still can't retrieve my saved game

Nope, i'm afraid your only recourse is an undelete program...just look on www.winfiles.com and there's bound to be a shareware or freeware program.

W32/MyDoom-F searches for and deletes 40% of files with extensions of AVI, BMP, DOC, JPG, MDB, SAV and XLS. Unfortunately, BG2 save game files are .SAV which explains why you can't retrieve them.

Sorry :( To stop this happening again, never open an email with any attachments ending EXE, SCR, COM, PIF, BAT, CMD or ZIP unless it's from a trusted source that gives an explicit (and sensible) reason for the attachment. If in doubt, don't open and ask the sender first. And if it's anything to do with Britney Spears then delete it on sight An application protection program will ask for confirmation before executing any file like this, you can find them on winfiles as well.

So, Shamrock-uk, what I'm hearing is that my saved games are toast? I received some feedback from the Interplay tech support group w/ the following directions:

Locate the saved game folder
Remove each saved game to my desktop
Move each saved game back into the folder 1 at a time until I find the one that crashes
Then delete any .bmp files. and try to reload

I only had 2 saved games, 1 auto-save and 1 quick save, neither one works and neither one contains a .bmp file. I was at 22 days and 55 hours, and on the verge of moving into chapter 3, so it really stinks that I have to start over. The ironic thing is that I was actually checking my e-mail from work on my home pc when this happened, so I did not think twice about opening the file, because I knew the sender. The virus has caused massive file loss where I work, however most of the files are automatically backed up, so retrieving them is not an issue. Looks like I'm back to Irenicus' cozy dungeon!

Have you tried a file-retrieval program? as long as you haven't installed something massive, the odds are good that the relevent sectors haven't been overwritten yet and you could get them back.

That one seems to have got good public reviews, give it a try - no need to give up yet

EDIT - Oh, and if you do have to trek through Chateau Irenicus again, allow me to recommend Dungeon-be-gone at http://www.forgottenwars.net/?page=m...a6498ad21deb08

It's funny, works perfectly and will have you out of there ASAP, without losing out on gold, XP, quests or items

If you have problems with that undelete programme, PM me and i'll download it and talk you through

except, you miss out on the helm of balduran and sword of chaos +2, IIRC. and those are two of the best items in the dungeon...(not sure about SoC+2, though)

Including the mail of the dead as well. The only thing to watch out for is if you only have a single character, the loot sometimes distributes itself into a second pile that you're not standing over. Make sure you use the tab key to check around you if you're missing stuff.

Shamrock, the tab key only works if you've got ToB installed.

shamrock_uk 02-28-2004 11:42 AM

Oh, thanks Lord, i never realised that. Must've just discovered it after I installed ToB. In that case, use your eyes and the mouse pointer
