I have a bad habit. I tend to collect potions. And I almost never use them. I keep on thinking "I'll use these when I'm up against a very strong opponnet." I usually forget and the potions are taking up space. Can you please tell me good times to use potions. Might seem obvious to you but not so to me. Should I use one every few battles or something? Even if I'm against something simpile such as kobolds? I also have the same problems with scrolls but I'm starting to break that habit now.

Note: Anytime is a good time to use a potion ;)

Just monitor your character's health during any battle really, and use them when their hp is low.

Edit: As for scrolls, if you have a mage on hand, have him/her write the spells into their spellbook.

Nonono I was wrong! I should have been more specific. I use health potions often! I just don't use ogres strength and attribute boosting potions often.

Oh, those types of potions. Well, I couldn't really tell you what they'd be good for, unless you want to boost your strength in a battle against a boss or to equip a weapon that has a strength requirement. Other than that I would say sell them.

Oh thank goodness I'm not the only potion hoarder! I have a problem with hoarding things both in real life and when I play games.

By the end of a game I am almost guaranteed to have spent at least half of the playing time involved in the finer details of inventory management so that I can carry the ridiculous amount of things I've collected. Stacking items as efficiently as possible, stashing things in bags of holding, storing things in containers and then retrieving them all before heading to a new location even if it means most of my party members are encumbered while they travel to a new area. I agonise over using anything or selling anything, with the mantra 'but it might come in handy sometime...'

And then I never use them. I've not played BG2 in a while, but in my last NWN game I didn't use a single scroll, wand, or potion throughout the whole game (other than for healing or restoration). It's utter madness, and I have to stop hoarding. You should see my flat, I never throw anything away!

Sythe, think of how many times you've reloaded after butt-kicking battles. Often, a slight change of strategy and/or potion-drinking before or during battle can really make a difference.

get ease of use mod infinite stacking potions...

;)i only hoarde blue, purple, and some magic blocking, those potions that are very rare, like storm giant strength...

Illumina Drathiran'ar 02-14-2004 02:16 AM

Epona, I do exactly the same thing. It's sick. By the end of SoA I have my stronghold meticulously organized, with shelves upon shelves of potions, ammo of all kinds... I don't sell any weapon over +2 enchantment or scrolls over level 4, you see. I don't want the general public getting their hands on powerful things like that. It's my responsibility to hoard. So any item with a name, any potion, armor... Literally spilling out of my stronghold.
Not to mention Quest Items. Don't get me started on those.

Sadly enough, you can add me to the "Clan of Hoarder" (rhymes with Mordor ;) ). I too am guilty of saving potions that I never end up using and storing weapons of mightiness that my BG1 characters would salivate over in a dusty bin back at the stronghold. Not to mention stuffing it all into a bag of holding before the last fight with Irenicus just so that I can stash it all in my Pocket Plane...

I even keep stacks of the most precious gemstones (diamonds, laeral's tears, emeralds, etc.). I just don't like the idea of Ribald's greasy hands all over them.

Welcome to the club! I therfore declare the beginning of Clan of Hoarder! (Surperb idea for a name Neomi!). Anyone else care to join the clan? :D
