You know how there's a chain contingency for the spell limited wish, and it allows you target other creatures, and use offensive spells, etc? Is there a correlating version of this that mages can use, or are they limited to the 'cast-defensive-spells-on-yourself' version?

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. Chain Contingency can target others or course and if high enough in level (it's a lvl9 spell!) and having the spell memorized OR when reading it from a scroll of course any mage can cast it.
What that has to do with "Limited Wish" is beqond me. ?!?

You're right. That first post was a grammatical nightmare. Let me explain more efficiently:

I have used limited wish before, and if your wisdom is high enough, one of the options is to be "Prepared for Anything." That said, it allows you to use a contingency spell, which allows you to target other creatures, use offensive spells, etc. Handy. Nice. Super. Whatever.

My only other experience with a contingency spell, was a...sixth? level spell called (if memeory serves) Chain contingency, and it does not allow you to use offensive spells, or target any other creature aside from the caster. I wished to know if the version of spell contingency available through the limited wish spell was available as an actual, writeable, memorize-able (not sure if that's a word...might as well hyphenate) spell, which it apparently is. I'm sadly unable to look up this basic information in a manual, as I am separated from my game guide by several thousand miles of earth and water *sob*. Anyways, thank you for your assistance, and pardon my long-winded expositions on the basics of 'spellchucking'. :D

ryaldin- You're thinking of Contingency (6th level spell). Chain Contingency (9th level spell) does allow you to target enemies. Great way to link 3 Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wiltings together.

don't trust the manual, trust the Spell Reference and Shadowkeepers Spell Browser:
contingency spells are:
</font>
  • Contingency: lvl6 spell; can store one spell up to caster-lvl/3 (max. lvl6), can only target caster</font>
  • Chain Contingency: lvl9 spell; can store 3 spells up to lvl8, can also target enemies (this is the spell you get from the limited wish selection)</font>
  • Magic Tatoo: is a contingency spells some enemies (especially Lichs) use, but that is in NO way accessible to the player (isn't even listed in SK's spell browser, seems to be coded into the creature file)</font>

ohh
I have chain contingency in my spell book
I really didn't know you could actually place offensive spells on it
well great... I'm gonna try

and to the topic starter, you can get it at adventurer's mart once you get back from spellhold/underdark and all that long <span style="color:#FFFFFF; font-family:Comic Sans MS">snuffles, it's kinda costy but whatever

There is also something similar to contingency called Spell Trigger.

There's one major difference between Contingencies (Contingency, Chain Contingency, Magic Tatoo) and Spell Sequencers/Triggers (Minor Spell Sequencer, Spell Sequencer, Spell Trigger).
While Contingencies are activated automatically by any specified condition (Helpless, Poisoned, See Enemy,...) Spell Sequencers have to be activated manually from the special abilities button.
Oh, and

actually there is another thing.. the best distraction you need when fighting big bad fighters chasing your mages.. or fighting a mob you need to distract a turn or two...

summon a horde of monsters is part of the limited wish and very handy sometimes :D
