there is a gem in a hen in umar hills...but i forgot how to get it, does it do something special? i never found anything to do with it

Well, first of all, talk to Jeb first to find the information ( you have to pay him), then talk to one of the chicken owner and tell him that you want to buy the chickens, then the farmer will give you the gem. The gem is uesd to upgrade the horn of varlhalla.</font>

what is that gem called? thinking of clua or shadowkeeper...naghty!

Go to the down-left side of the bridge district where there is a fish seller. Enter his house, and you'll find the horn in the second floor. But beware of deadly traps ;) .

You need not do it the diplomatic way, brute force will also do the trick.
The gem is not unique (though rare) and can be found at other locations too.

The gem is called a Beljoril. And the chicken one is not the only one in the game IIRC.

There's at least two of 'em in the game, that I know of. Maybe there are more, but I doubt that..
