Some of this may be because I have the BG2 Collector's Edition (which provides the manual only in a tough-to-read PDF file), but I just don't get proficiency points. Can someone please explain to me?

I did a forum search and read everything I can find in the manual, so I THINK I understand that most classes can assign a maximum of 2 proficiency points to weapons/styles (only fighters/fighter kits can assign the maximum of 5). I'm good with that, and it explains why I couldn't add a third point in Long Bow to my recently-leveled Stalker. But last night, my amigo Yoshimo leveled-up, and I couldn't add even a second proficiency point to anything he already was using, including "single weapon style" (where I was hoping to put it). Can somebody tell me what gives? Is a bounty hunter thing?

Thanks!

Thieves, mages and clerics are limited to a single prof point per weapon or style. Only combat orinted classes can get 2 stars, and only pure fighters (or duals involving such) can get 5.

Many thanks, andrewas! I guess there is some logic in that, isn't there. Did I just miss this in the manual somewhere?

Froum the Forum FAQ:
Quote:

Fighters, Rangers, Barbarians and Paladins get 1 point every 3 levels.
Clerics, Druids, Bards, Thieves and Monks get 1 point every 4 levels.
Mages and Sorcerers get 1 point every 6 levels.

Thanks Xen; that part I'd found and understood. I just didn't realize that some classes only allowed you to allocate 1 point maximum to a weapon proficiency/skill. (The manual mentions that only fighters/fighter kits allow you to reach the 5-slot proficiency, and I THOUGHT it said that the other classes allowed a 2-slot proficiency, but apparently neither applies to stealth/magic-oriented classes.) andrewas got me all straightened out.

Okay, now I found it, right there in the manual under the (ta-da!) Proficiencies header on page 13. Just in case anybody still cares. I guess I just misread it.
