I am starting the whole series again and can't decide on a class. I stay away from mage classes they just aren't my style. what are your suggestions?

What have you not tried yet?

I suggest, the opposite of what you played last time, to explore the other side of the game.

I played through BG1 with a ftr/thf. In BGII I never made it out of chptr 2 due to constant deployments. I started with a stalker then tried a swashbuckler. I was thinking a paladin, stalker, fighter, or thief. But then what kit to choose.

I played a thief through Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal, and I recall being a bounty hunter. Great trap abilities! :D

i'm a serial restarter too - ftr/thf is a great SoA/ToB character on paper though - random thoughts follow - i have

a gnomish kensai in a party of 6 stalled in the underdark
an elven stalker in a party of 4 who got their ass kicked in the stronghold quests
an elven assassin in a party of 4 currently romping through alkathla

the kensai party has the 'classic' NPCs (minsc, jahiera, imoen, nalia, amoen) that seem to have the most plot-related dialogue so i really want to play the main plot with them first - kensai is predictably good if a bit one-dimensional
- a party of 6 is pretty high maintenance but it 'needs' them all - i also found the underdark really, well, dark - i should go back

i don't think i'll pick up the stalker party again - the kit is great and the backstab very pleasing but i think i think this is a solo character for me - just seems right - i'm not liking the NPCs either, aerie, mazzy & jan

the assassin is my latest game and combined with korgan, viconia & edwin is making a good (evil) party - very nice - assassin is turning out well and she's starting to grow into a reasonable thief too - i liked the stronghold and she now looks as cool as - their motivation is good as well, a pure mercenary adventurer company - i am really looking forward to korgan's second star in dual wield

anyway - not sure if that's any help . . . few things to consider maybe

i guess you dont really want anything to do with magic like clerics or druids as well..

shame im a magic favorite user. ;)

but you can try berserker or barbarian :D
assasin is good as well...

Rangers are very versatile, they can use allmost every weapon and armor...at least i think...anyway my favorite from the Ranger kit is an Archer. I'm playing one right now, and i am not displeased with him to say the least.

Yeah! Try using an archer! I bet it would be full of challenge later ;) . If possible, solo it!

Sorcerer! :D :D

No if you don`t like Mages then stay away from Sorcerers like hell! :D

I suggest that you try Blade and/or a Cavalier. Both very good kits!
