There are two purple cilinders. The one you describe is probably the one of Sanctuary, which is more a chopped off turned around cone than a cilinder. The real cilinder form is used by Protection from Normal Missiles.

That's the 1st level priest spell Sanctuary. "Oh, look, it's a floating column of indigo jello!" I think if I was around when Sanctuary was cast, I'd be more worried about a big floating column of indigo jello than any person Faerun ever produced.
