Ok, I have been through Baldur's gate so many times now and am looking for something else to play I guess. I love the ranger type character, a few minor priest spells, switching from long bow to weapons and stealth. However this game is all focused on magic, if you can't cast mage spells then soloing is a tedious affair. I was wondering if anyone had played games that weren't focused on magic, but rather on melee where you could still be a ranger type.

I tried, but it all went pear shaped in the Asylam (sp?)

I think you meant "asylum" but I still don't know what you're goin on about

Although I find a party a lot more exciting than solo I think that a solo-ranger should be no problem. After all most of the tough enemies are easier to beat with sheer muscle than with magical tactics and if it's too tough you can always slip by hidden in shadows. My favourite Ranger-game was with a Stalker (backstab) but the Archer can be incredible too. And don't forget that Rangers get two free points in dual-wielding.

As a solo archer for example, how would you get by traps? Also, what about beating anything that can cast pfmw or stoneskin? There aren't that many6 arrows of dispelling around. I guess I could be sneaky and kill the mages, waiting for spell protections to fade etc, but traps would be one of the most annoying problems I think. How do you solo rangers usually deal with them?

As long as you got elemental damage (e.g. Gesen Bow) you can put down any spellcaster more quickly than you would with a mage or a melee fighter. If I have her in party Mazzy is my mage-killer and an archer would probably do even better with that.

Remember to alternate between unenchanted arrows and enchanted arrows when fighting against Mages and using the Short Bow of Gesen.

There are plenty of arrows of dispelling if you use them sparingly. For a bit of coin, there are 80 for sale right away in Ch. 1. You generally need only one or two of them to take down a mage (one arrow will dispel multiple spells. You only need to fire another one if they cast more protections). Since you don't use spells, you could care less if they have spell protections up. The only things you need to dispel are stoneskins and prot. from missles/weapons--of course arrows of dispelling don't work against pfmw since they are magical weapons--so just use normal arrows or a normal melee weapon.
