I too had a similar problem when Gorf the Squisher (soon to be Gorf the squashed) made his appearance. If you have any savegame files before you even talked to him, or an autosave, try reloading from that point and starting the interaction again. Also (sometimes, and invariably, when you least expect/count on/want it to happen, resting will (for whatever reason) give some of these quests a bit of a jump start and a kick in the pants. If you **minor spoiler** want to get to the rest of this mini-quest, talk to the keeper of the pits. He's standing in what would generally be referred to as the southern region of the room, next to some column's and the fighting pit. He'll give you the remainder of the information you need to put the 'squish' into the squisher.
