Spoilers******************************
Having escaped from Irenicus (second time - chapter 4/5?), i am now in a place that either is or has something to do with underdark. However, i keep being killed by Mind Flayers(?). My party is good aligned consisting of: Me - Paladin Minsc Anomen Eerie Jan Nalia Unfortunately the Mind Flayers keep killing party members before i can damage them, i left the one in irenicus' place alone after spending over an hour trying to kill it. Also, how long before i can get back to the map and Imoen? |
errr...where are you now?
can you be more specific? when and where exactly? for fighting mind flayers, do a search or check the beholders thread on this page, we've talked about fighting Illithids (tougher than standard mind flayers) as well. [ 09-05-2003, 07:51 AM: Message edited by: teardropmina ] |
Before you can DAMAGE them?
Are you sure you are talking about Mind Flayers? What kinds of weapons do you have? +1 +2 +3 +4 ? Have you cast chaotic commands on any of your tanks? SPOILING QUESTIONS * * * * * * * * * * Did you go with saemon Havarian? Did he get you to the fishman city? Have you left the city? Have you gone to some of the side tunnels in Underdark? Oh, do they stun you or confuse or something such and then kill you? Chaotic commands should solve that. |
The main reason why your NPC's die is because of Devour Brain/INT-Drain attacks. Protection from magical weapons will give you 4 rounds of immunity to those attacks, however, I see that probably only Nalia & Jan can cast them (if you have them memorized) and they are not good fighters. They are, for 4 rounds, good decoys. I assume you do not have Tactics are any such mod installed, so here would be the most simple solution of beating them: cast chaotic commands and free action if you feel like it: the reason for this is that you fighters must be able to fight at all times during your combat. If you have Prot from mag weapons, cast it and use those NPC's to engage the flayers. Proceed to use you fighters to beat them down when they are distracted. If you dont have PfMW, use haste if you have it and attack the flayers with your fighters. Whenever you see Devour Brain in your text box appear, check the INT stat of the NPC affected. If it is 6 or below, pull them back. Devour Brain eats your INT, but it will regain its original status within a few seconds. Just make sure your INT doesnt drop below 0 cuz that means death.
In the second strat, free action and chaotic commands are a must. GL&HF! |
Although I know this has been discussed quite a bit, I'll still address it in this post: First protect your tanks from their blasts (discussed enough in the above posts), then make sure your tanks are ahead of the rest of the unprotected party (so the flayers only blast the tanks), then engage the flayers with ranged weapons. Try to pull back if the flayers get close before finally engaging in melee. When in melee, watch the int. drain as Zuvio described.
They really aren't that difficult when you are protected and try to stay in ranged combat with them. You can also try to put some summons between your characters and them to give you more time with ranged weapons. |
Since you will eventually get intelligence-drained almost no matter what you do, bring along some potions of mind focusing or, better yet, genius. They raise your intelligence, so you'll have more points to play with when you go toe-to-toe with the flayers (who won't last long in melee).
Also, if you're in the underdark, you will - SPOILER . . . . . . . find a potion and another item (of somewhat biblical appearance) to help you deal with the flayers. |

Hey, that's a new Manshoon picture. It was about time.

Teardropmina, I believe a mind flayer's psionic attacks doesn't affect you depending on your Armor since it is not a physical attack. I'm pretty sure it's a magical attack, so perhaps buffing up your magic resistance might help. Although you won't have it by now, a special sword that Cromwell can put together for you can help you fight mindflayers, and another weapon found in ToB will also help you kill them. |

ADD: I think their brain devouring physical attack counts as "magical attack" as well which pfmw should be able to protect; however, I would only use pfmw if there's F/M to fight them because most mages have crappy melee skills. If there's no F/M, I would rather go for the low AC fighters route. [ 09-05-2003, 10:31 PM: Message edited by: teardropmina ] |
