Possible spoilers***************

Before escaping from the prison(start of game) I aquired one of each history book from the library area. Do I need these books? Most appear to be on the shelves in the city.

Also, within the city there are rooms with bookcases, chests and tables, is it safe to leave extra equipment in them?

Thanks

The books are just there as extras, to give you some background info on the setting of the game. You can sell them, they aren't needed for anything in the game.

And yes, you can stow any excess equipment into the chests and barrels you find. If you leave stuff on the floor though, it will disappear after a while. BTW, some areas are "reset" during the game, which does make you lose the equipment put in the chests. So for your storage, pick a container that is 1. in a "safe" area, and 2. in an area that you will be able to revisit throughout the game. Waukeen's Promenade in Athkatla is a good area. Yup... There were a few books (who also looked like regular books) in BG1 with some quest value, but I don't think that's the case in BG2. In fact, any important quest-related books (or special books containing hints which may or may not be of use) will look different from the "ordinary" books; not always entirely logical or realistic, but very handy from a game-related perspective - at least you won't overlook them all that easily. ;)
