Heh, this is about my 3rd time doing BGII and I haven't finished the game once yet! I have been a necromancer, a wild mage, and a bard.... can you tell I like magic? But now I want to try something else.
I haven't tried out any of the ranger or thief classes yet. I did play a thief in BG1, which was cool.... I'm not into powergaming, I'm more in it for the experience, ;) For those who have played these classes, which is more fun? I heard the Thief stronghold wasn't that great and that the ranger cabin was better... and what about the class kits? Assasin looks good... Hmmm All of the ranger kits look good too, even the beastmaster kit Oh yea, I also have ToB installed, so I'll be bringing his character right through to the end... hopefully. BGII gods, I await your advice. [ 07-25-2003, 09:04 PM: Message edited by: esquire ] |
Hmmmm... odd, I generally thought more people like the Thief Stronghold to the Ranger Stronghold. Well, that is how I personally feel anyway.
Roleplaying eh? Well... if you want to be good-aligned... I recommend the Ranger:Archer. It is a very fun class to play with in parties. If you veer to dark side... an Assassin with proficiencies in Darts, Shortbows and Dagger/Katana is pretty sweet too. |
My favorite stronghold in the whole game is the Playhouse. My second favorite is the ranger's. The two NPC rangers do NOT do this class justice. I recommend the Archer.
You can give the thief's stronghold a much-needed upgrade with the Tactics mod. Found at weidu.org, the Improved Stronghold beefs up the battles, and Improved Mae'Var allows the little punk to cast his mage spells. (Mae'Var's a thief/mage, but his armor prevented spellcasting. With Tactics, Mae'Var will ditch his armor once the battle begins.) My favorite thief kit is the swashbuckler. Kinda like taking a bard, minus the lore, spellcasting, and song, and swashies have little perks of their own. Assassins are useful if you can backstab well, and bounty hunters are okay if you like cheesy traps. |
So you like magic but want to try something new? Hey that sounds like me when I first started BG2 after beating BG1. Well here is what I did, I choose a thief/mage, muliclass I think it was (I was an elf). So that way I didn't have to give up my magic, but still get to try something different. So that is my advice. But since you did play a thief in BG1 maybe it is the wrong advice, oh well you choose.
edit: oh yeah you still get the sphere (in case you were wondering). I think the sphere is the best, but that may be because I have never gotten anything else. [ 07-25-2003, 11:38 PM: Message edited by: Maj ] |

Thanks I'll give it a try! I never even relized that non-mage players got different places. So I take it that a bard gets the playhouse? I've heard a lot about bards lately. A lot!

I've really enjoyed the hell out of my blade. With 18 STR/DEX, he's a decent fighter, but the blade abilities make him exceptional. He has three stars in dual wielding, and I use the Offensive Spin ability liberally, so he's able to cause a lot of damage quickly. I use the mage spells mostly as defensive spells, especially armor and stoneskin, and with those I am tough enough to sit on the front lines. With his speed, he's a great mage-killer, and not a bad hit and run archer. And I figure late game he'll have UAI, so he'll pretty set equipment wise, and the HLA Improved Bard Song will compensate for his weak bard song now.

played ranger/archer a couple of months ago and it did tickle me. i'm playing a thief (assasin) now and in my own preferences... cooler than being a ranger.
you can poison your weapon with this class... backstab up to x7 ( i enjoy surprising my enemies with this doing 100 plus damage). you can set traps... nasty traps against anything that walks in RED. and you can have the expanded stronghold. and if youll have the ABILITY... you can choose the USE ANY ITEM to have the priveledge to access the items in the game. ENJOY! Legolas Greenleaf |
