I read in an earlier post that the shaft might be in the Planar sphere. After leaving that place, I returned and couldn't find the shaft. If it's in the sphere, where exaclty do I look?

not Planar Sphere but Planar Prison.
Go, interact a little bit with some Planar creatures and you will find it.
