I believe that I am solidly in chapter 2, but I'll occasionally walk into buildings & set off monsters without being bidden to. So far, I've killed Gaxx and another Lich and have ended up with golden skeleton parts(?). Is this part of a future quest or have I 'broken' something (need to go back to a prior save?

(I have no objection to a spoiler here)

You have not killed Gaxx, you have merely killed his guardians. ;)

To fight Kangaxx, bring both sets of golden bones to a house to the left of Mae'Var's Guildhall in the Docks District. I seriously recommend a save before you attempt this if you do not have any foreknowledge of Kangaxx.

Killing Gaxx just gives you the you_know_what_item_of_Gaxx. It doesn't mess with any other quests. And for the others quest_people rarely present on the quest_people_places before the quest is started.

By the way killing Gaxx in chap 2 is very impressive

since it seems that you have not beaten kangaxx before, i suggest that you do NOT asked to be spoiled on how to beat him or anything(EDIT: unless you really need it), when you get to him. the battle is most fun when you are COMPLETELY unaware of what is coming up.

Well, I could use a lot of adjectives to describe that fight, but fun is not one of them... ;)

its plenty of fun...if you think back to it. may be a tad bit frustrating the first time.
