*******************SPOILER************************ *****
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Ok folks, I need some help. How do you clear the mind flayer lair? I'm trying to take out the third room (6 mind flayers and one creature -- cn't remember the name) and i have in my party areie, jan, minsc, jdheira (?? spelling), Amoen (cleric fighter) and my self ranger. I do have in my arsenal 2 wands of cloud kill my ranger has a sword that protect from domination/charm and does magic damage ( something called "???drink......") any help would be appreciated. thanks |
Generally you can't harm them with magic - they have high magic resistance.
First of all - around here in the forum there are so many nice hints about fighting Mind Flayers. Go to the search page and you'll find them. Here is the most safe tactic. If Aerie have blade shield (lvl 6 spell - I'm not sure about the name) make her memorize it (she must have two slots for lvl 6 memorizing at this point) and hopefully you have potions of invisibility make her drink one. One potion makes her invisible for 12 hours and you can rest for 8 in order to re-memorize the spells. As she is invisible let her go near the 6 (or near one of them) and cast the shield (switch off the AI or she'll start hitting them and they will see her) - with the first hit they all will come near her. Patience is needed because they make save vs spell or drink healing potion. When the first shield is over cast the second one. After this go to rest return and cast them again. After the second rest Aerie will not be invisible and you should make her drink another potion. sometimes it happens mind flayer to cast psionic blast to Aerie (as she is invisible), but do not afraid she'll be held only and still they can not see her. The group of six should be death after 2-3 potions of invisibility. Have fun [ 05-13-2003, 09:31 AM: Message edited by: Merlin from Amber ] |
Try the 5th level cleric spell Chaotic Commands. You have 3 characters who can cast it, so I'm sure you can memorize plenty of them. Put it on your tanks, and send them forth to make some chunky illithid salsa.

just summon Mordekainen`s sword and send it it...
Mind Flayer! Where? |
Here's a little tip:Don't use Minsc in the fights with mind flayers as there attack drains intelligence and Minsc has very low intelligence. This is because if the intelligence stat reaches zero your brain is sucked out and you die.
Also as mentioned to avoid there psionic attacks have your ranger protected by chaotic commands if your going to use him in melee. Xen already mentioned summoning mordenkains swords that is a good tactic as the mind flayers psionic attacks don't work on them likewise skeleton warriors. However you need to be a fairly high level to summon these creatures so melee may be a more viable option. If that's the case use the lairs doors. Lure a mind flayer or two in the passage way and shut the door behind him that way you won't have to fight them all at once. And also if your rangers intelligence is dangerously low run away and shut the door until the stat returns to normal. |
would it also help if i got rid of minsc and replace him with keldorn?
|
I think yes..IMO Keldorn is better than mincs(true sight, dispel magic etc,,)
|
i found that the easiest thing to do here was have some raise dead spells handy, even if you dont get skele warriors the regular ones are just used to block the passage, have ure clerics or whomever casts the raise dead spell ready to cast again once they are reduced to about 2-3 and have the rest of your party assault them long range, they should fall rather fast if you have enough raise dead spells handy.

(This is probably cheese, though one 'veteran' did give me a thumbs up on this a long time ago...
If you've had enough of trying to kill illithid normally, a very easy way is to have 2 or three people invisible and block the doorway. Cast Chaotic Commands on one or two fighters with ranged weapons so they won't get psionic-blasted, and have them let loose (returning weapons & self-generating ammo are preferred). Usually you can get two rooms done before the Chaotic Commands expires, otherwise consider Oils of Speed. It doesn't matter if the invisible blockers get psionic-blasted, because all they have to do is stand there. Sorry if it's considered cheese, but at least it wasn't the cloudkill-and-shut-the-door trick... the raise dead idea is interesting and non-dairy, might try that next time... oh BTW I read that even Minsc can take out the flayers solo if he is super-ultra buffed, armor-wise, the illithid simply can't hit him if the AC is at -15 or whatever) |
Sword = Adjatha the Drinker, Long Sword +2.
Immune to charm and domination. You will be fine with the Mind Flayers if you summon a few Skeleton warriors (L15+) to take them on. They are almost entirely magic resistant and immune to 'brain drain'. A nice haste spell on a group of them will take you through all of the Illithid dungeon :D |
