Spoilers

In the underdark at the mindflayer lair when they capture you why don't the control you with their psonic powers? Wouldn't you be mind slaves or something?

Well, they keep you as gladiators, after all. They want you to fight and use your skills and mind yourself. If they had controlled you, what would be the fun and entertaining with that? ;)

Salvatore's novels spoiler (Exile):

When Illithid capture Belwar and Drizzt, Belwar is bought by one mind flayer and kept as a gladiator. He is mentally dominated and is a mind-slave. He wants only to please his master, even if it means death.

Why should the illithid fear physical attacks? If you misbehave, they can shut your mind down from a distance. :D

I've always thought that the Githyanki managed to block the mind flayers domintion allowing the characters to break free. Until that point, there is no way for the characters to escape , because they were under the control of the mind flayers. Could be wrong though.
