I too have wondered this question, in fact I have removed all of the iron from the mine, and put it in a stash.

The Liquid is the corrosive used to distroy and break down Iron ore
the rock you call coal is contaminated ore and throw it away fast because it will cause your weapons to start corroading and breaking if you keep it in
your pack. Just keep the liquid until just before yo inter the thief camp by
then everone will know what was causing all the iron products to go bad and you can just toss it
