Had a demo for BG and it ran fine. Went and bought the full version today and it won't install! Says I have a .dll error (and this after I uninstalled the demo--with no problems on any of the other games I installed/ran not ten minutes before!). We run WinME, Pent 3, 700 mghtz (or so) with 20 gig free, 64 mg RAM. Any ideas what could be the trouble? Virus scan says no virus and diagnostics can't find anything, either.

first, welcome to BG board....

and when you uninstalled the demo, you restarted the comp right?

I don't think so......my son was playing another game and we restarted after that/before we uninstalled. Then, if I recall right, we uninstalled then tried to install the full version.

Ran a diagnostic on disk #1 and found 14 file errors--could be why the silly thing won't/can't install. Wrote tech support. This is a brand new, never-been-opened game, so I have no way of proving to the store it is faulty other than my word--nope, wait a minute, I printed out the results of the diagnostics! At any rate, thanks for your help.

Sooner--or rather--later, I shall play Baldur's Gate!

I ran into the same thing months ago, tech support sent me a form letter. I yearn to plat the bg series from the begining again, and to try tdsotsc but alas, I have found no recourse. I bought another copy of the game from another retailer for posterity, it wouldnt install either. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/crying.gif
if you come to a solution please let me know, either in this forum, or via my email that is in my profile.

good luck

aw geez guys! sorry to hear that! hmmmm.... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/ponder.gif
did you delete ALL the files related to the Balder's Gate try-out?

you did the ScanDisk Wizard and virus scan before you download it right?

tech tip for users: I always ran the ScanDisk, defrag, virus scan, and restart the computer BEFORE I install the game.

Plus close few of the running programs (little icons on the bottom right of your Start bar such as: MSN, AIM, RealPlayer, Yahoo Messenger, WinAmp, etc) would make the game run easier. (don't ask me how but it worked for my little Win98 PentiumII Gateway)

if all your getting is a dll error and its windows related, just do a search for the dll file or for a dll archive on the internet. I used to have agreat one bookmarked but its no longer there. Logically, shouldnt that clear up the problem?

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys. I took the game back and exchanged it--after trying once again to install (I'm a little stubborn http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif ) Came home eventually (the car decided to try the same trick by crashing momentarily.....) and the *&^* game installed like a dream!!! Now, once I fugure out how to play.....It's quite a bit different than my beloved Darkstone.

But, I *did* virus scan and do a full diagnostic on the system.

I *did* inspect the disk very carefully for visible defects as well as cleaning it.

I even resorted to checking for the .dll files BG said I was 'missing' and they were right where they were supposed to be. I e-mailed tech support and tried to call, but this company surely doesn't have very good support, does it.

So, it was the disk itself at fault in this instance.

Off to the game!!!..........
