<font color="deepskyblue">I've noticed the same thing concerning the <font color="white">Silence</font> spell. It seems to be practically useless. I've hit spellcasters with it, only to have them continue casting right along.

I was fighting the lich in the City Gate District last night. He followed me out into the tavern and proceeded to cast <font color="white">Silence</font> on my spellcasters (Edwin, Viconia, Jaheira). The two ladies both had the little "ear" emblem on their picture (indicating they were Silenced). Just for the heck of it, I tried to cast anyway....it worked fine!

I dunno, maybe the <font color="white">Silence</font> is just a big DUD in the Arcane Department. I know I certainly won't be using it anymore.</font>

Silence spells do not usually work against enemy Mages( even those with the default AI) as they usually have a contingency to counter it with Vocalise. Fear-based and blind spells will work better, as does Insect Plague and such.

Enemy Priests however... are a different story. ;) With a simple level two spell, you can render multiple enemy Priests all but useless.

Quoting from the Spells Reference site:
Quote:

Silence
Most of the lower level enemy Mages are scripted to cast Vocalize with ForceSpell() (not disruptable) and without checking HaveSpell(). Silencing them will do no more than occupy them for a round. Most of the high level Mages (including Liches) are more vulnerable to silence, and priests cannot even Vocalize. Being silenced disrupts spellcasting.
It was Conster's script who cheesily casted Vocalize. It's not really a contingency -- because you can only have one contingency active at a time, yet many enemy Mages just "pull out" the most convenient one to them, be it Stoneskin or Vocalize.

This is exactly why Blindness or Fear spells work better. Both of these are "script breaking" effects, which will prevent the creature from using these cheesy "contingencies".

Dundee Slaytern 03-04-2003 12:05 AM

Nono, I did not mean the spell Contingency. ;) I would have spelt it with a capital C if I did. Contingencies are so called countermeasures, things a person do when something happens.

Oh well... You learn something everyday. :D
