How do you kill these things? I am a solo ranger with all my stats in swords. I die every time fighting two gauths and a beholder. Even if i use a potion of speed, they hold and then serious wound me to death. Any ways to avoid their abilities or anything?

a ranger with all stats in swords???? you might just have to pick up a bow to do it, or use the item/scroll trick to use some spells

I probably am going to have to use a bow(cheap weapons as far as i am concerned) but is there a way to defend or repel their rays of doom!?

If I were playing a Solo Warrior and getting royally plastered by Beholders, I would see no shame in going & getting the Shield of Balduran (via the Bonus Merchants). Unfortunately, this will make the Beholders ridiculously easy, which is why using the Shield is universally looked on as a cheap way to fight.

"bonus" merchants? I hate this game so much. Please can someone give me a ToB friendly download of these?

Hit'n'Run'n'Hide with a bow was what I always did vs Beholders when I played a thief or a ranger. Though it's damn tricky even with Boots of Speed and Oil of Speed since their reaction time is practically non-existant. Gauths cannot cast Anti-Magic Rays so if you're only facing those, or if you've already killed the Beholder, you can use a potion of Magic Shielding + Belt of Inertial Barrier + Potion of Absorbation (sp?) to become completely immune to their attacks.
