UPDATED: Be Sig Smart: The larger your image in your sig, the longer it takes for others to load it. Don't forget, MANY people still use dial-up internet, and huge images take a LONG time to download. we allow the following as per signatures:

We allow up to 2 Images in your sig. But, we prefer you use 1 or combine the 2 into one image. If you use 1 image in your signature, you are allowed the image resolution to be 225x155, and no more than 150Kb in size. This NEW Size will take effect on January 27th 2002. Anyone before that time will still be allowed to keep their slightly larger sig.

If you wish to use 2 images, both images must be no larger than 280x220 combined in resolution, and 150Kb in size as well. Your text sig or 'tagline' must not exceed 300 characters as well.

If you do not follow these rules, your profile may be edited, your image removed and account profile locked out to modification.

ehr ... but I have a lot more than two images.
They're down to 592 x 444 now.
I'm using *swashbuckler vs. improved Irenicus* as an example ...
Uploading them to a webhost now

If you`re going to put them in your signature, follow those rules; if you just want to put them in a post, converting them from bitmaps to jpegs should be enough.

If you got them on a really fast server, a 56Kbit modem could download a 100kb pic in about 14 seconds, or 7 Kb per second. Now say you got a *really* long intro which takes the average person about 2 minutes to read through, that should give them enough time to download 840 Kb worth of images.

So if you got 10 images, keeping them in the 80-90 Kb range should be fine, IF you have a fast server that is. Graffiti.net is a pretty slow server which doesn't give you anywhere near 7 Kb per second, but I heard you switched, so that might not be a problem

Are you saying my intro's too long  !!?? ;)
Changing webhost now btw..

Rataxes 01-18-2003 09:26 AM

You got two and a half pretty damn huge paragraphs before the first image, so, YES! But it's all good Don't mind reading a lot as long as it's interesting

Hmm, not sure where all this talk about signatures has come from, daan wants the images for his improved Irenicus story.

Size isn't really the problem here, its image quality. I've taken screenshots at 800x600, and then reduced the quality using photoshop, and these have been fine for 56k users to download.

You can set an image lossy percentage (100 being maximum, 0 being the lowest) within most good image editing programs. 20 is a reasonable compromise here and will ensure that your filesize isn't too big at the expense of some quality.

Also worth using is a 'progressive' feature of jpeg images (you can set this in Photoshop/PSP/Fireworks etc), which will allow users to download them in multiple passes, so at least they can see the images appearing instead of staring at a blank space until the image has been fully downloaded.
