Sir ReGiN 01-17-2003 03:24 AM

Hey guys, I'm just wondering what the difference will be between dual-wielding two speed-factor 0 weapons, and dual-wielding one SF 0 and one SF 1 weapon. How will it affect my attack? Will it adjust to the one with the highest speed-factor? And which combination is most suitable for backstab?
Thanks in advance

In my experience, very little whatsoever. IIRC, speed factor determines only the pause for the first attack of the round, and all subsequent attacks follow a definitive time pattern.

If this wern't the case, and you were swinging an unenchanted 2-Handed sword (speed factor 10) attacking 3 times per round, then there would be a huge pause between attacks, effectively limiting APR to 1. Since this is not the case, the pause is implemented for the first swing only, with all other swings striking with the same timing as a weapon of any speed factor for that round. Then the process starts again for the next round. (I hope this makes sense).

Also worth noting, a weapon with a speed factor of 0 doesn't automatically grant an extra APR. Kudane+2 has no speed factor but is the only exception to this rule. Looking at say the staff of the ram +6 ot hindos doom +4 (both SF 0), they do not grant more than 1 APR base.

The speed factor will only count for the first swing, and as the main hand always strikes first, the speed factor of the weapon in the main hand will determine the delay.

Well, either really. The difference in speed of striking between a weapon of speed factor 0 and speed factor 1 is 6/10=0.6 seconds. Hardly going to make a difference.

My thief with 2 enchanted short-swords has never (to my knowledge) managed to hit with both of them in a backstab. the first one hits, bonus damage, the guy turns around and it's all on as normal combat from there. can you actually make a dual-wielded backstab ? btw... ** in shortswords and *** in dual-wielding (he's a fighter dualed thief)

You can backstab whilst dual wielding, but only the main hand weapon counts for the multiplied damage.

Not necessarily - it seems to remember which hand was used for the last attack and the backstab is then with the other. I've found that by using the scarlet ninja-to in the off-hand. Every so often I'll get a message that the weapon is unsuitable for back-stab, which is a pain.

BTW - Jim, did you get the PM?

Fair enough then. I was under the impression that if you started an attack sequence, and then did another action (such as quaffing a potion of invisibility), the attack sequence would be reset (i.e. back to the main hand). I'll have to look into this further.

I thought the sequence should reset...

I've only ever noticed when using the Scarlet Ninjato (after getting UAI) because of the *failed* notice. It could be something odd to do with that weapon, or the additional attack it gives you. Have to investigate with Belm...
