I only got the game for cristmas and cant work out how to get the keys into
the pipes on the underground place on chapter 2 (under copper corronet)

By clicking mouse twice when the cursor changes to two arrows. Reading the hint first tells you in which order to place the stuff.

Is that what you wanted to know? I am unsure.. my english.. how about this:

The right order is explained in walkthroughs.. I can´t remember it at the moment, but the hints are so obvious that you will figure it out easily.

And if nothing happens when you hover your mouse over them, one chance is that you are missing one or more of the items.

If i recall correctly, the hints are first displayed when you first enter the room and every time after that until you go and chat with quallo. After that, the option to read the hints is gone. Instead, when clicking on the pipes, it performs the function of placing the items within.

This had me stuffed the first time as i had forgotten the hints and had to resort to a bit of trial and error. Nothing a well timed quick-save can't resolve.

Make sure you have all the four items in your inventory, before you go to the pipes. Now, click them in his order: 3, 3, 1, 1, 2, 2, 4, 4. ;) </font>

you will need (in order) hand, ring, blood, staff.

staff from the kolbald leader. hand from sewer drain. ring from skelaton lovers and blood from carrion crawler.

I had a problem with this to. It doesnt matter what order the stuff is in amongst your characters stuff, it matters what order you click the pipes. If I remember correctly (from left to right as you face them) start with the second from left....
