well a mage is suppose to be frail.....look at irenicus.....he is pumped....

after u beat him at hell for the last time...this movie appears.....well he wakes up and looks around....and all of a sudden these demons/devils appear....well when one of them attacked he flipped it over into the lava....then when more attack him and he uses his fist.....

so i think that irenicus is a monk/mage dude...what do u think?

I would sure like to know why a mage has muscles THAT big. You dont get muscles like that from writing scrolls thats for sure.

Where does it say that a mage has to be a skinny runt??? They can have a natural 18 in Str, Dex, or Con just like a fighter.

Khelben Blackstaff (of Forgotten Realms) is a good example of a powerful mage that is also relatively young and gifted with strong, physical stats.

Also from the DragonLance books, theres that black sailor archmage of the white robes. from his discription, he doesnt seem to be a skinny a$$ sort of a mage.

It's stereotyping. Is everyone in the world who has a PhD a skinny couch potato? No - you get muscular, fit people who are also highly intelligent in RL, so i wouldn't think it's too hard to get them in the Realms too

Plus an extremely high level mage can still do some damage in melee - especially if they are wearing a girdle of strength.

A high level mage can whoop a low level fighter's but in melee, so they aren't necessarily weaklings.

Consider Gandalf in LOTR - watch his fight with the demon - and he's an old man - classic scene by the way.

Well, remeber that he is an exiled Elf from Suldanessellar. Who knows what his profession used to be.
And, when he got exiled, he became corrupted by hate and wanting revenge. He wanted to become godly powerful. Something tells me that he did more than just reading. ;)

His occupation was "chief mage" of the elves, or something. he was "as powerful as a mortal mage could be without divine intervention". IIRC, Ellesime tells us this
