he has magic missle memorized, but when i try to access the spell it is dark and i cant click on it.

Is it possible that he is wearing something that interfers with his spell casting? I think I have had that problem occasionally...not sure though.

I think a bard is unable to cast spells if (s)he's wearing anything heavier than studded leather (unless it is Drizzt's enchated Mithril armor).

In fact, you can't cast any wizard spells whilst wearing anything other than wizard robes or elven armour.

Stupid isn't it. Take your armour off. I never play bards for this very reason. Unless you get decent Elven chain, then consider bards annoying in battles.

Not even studded leather? Hmm. I never use them. Only once or twice just goofing off. I guess you would have to equip a bard with bracers of defense and amulet or rings of protection then.

Not even any leather. Can't wear mage robes either. Bards can be great, but you have to accept that you are not gonna use this guy as a tank. Get him some bracers and a ring of protection, a buckler if he's gonna use a sling rather than a bow/crossbow, and keep him out of the front line.
Cast magic missile (or other offensive spell) as many times as you can, then weigh in with ranged weapons (make sure you have a proficiency in bows or missiles from the start) or back up your fighters with bardsong, which gives them bonuses to THAC0 and damage. Only draw your sword if you are attacked at close range.

OR cast armour or other protective spell, then weigh in as a melee fighter.

You will have fun with a bard, it just requires a bit more thought than to charge straight in with swords flashing.

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.
