I had Bg a long time ago and sold it because it was too frustrating. I forgot how hard BG1 was compared to BG2 and bought it recently for $20. 3 vampiric wolves ripped up my whole party! This game is frustrating. I had to reload 10 times in the Nashkel mines. My party is sooo weak its pathetic. Bg2 is child's play compared to this game.

Yeah http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...s/biglaugh.gif

As we say here, Bg1 is "OH NO !! A WOLF !! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES !! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/uhoh2.gif"
Bg2 is "another dragon ?? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../drooling1.gif"

What? i donk know what other people have found but wolves dont seem 2 bother my party, their not that strong, a collection of paladins and mages all around level 7 and i can easily whack any wolves even vampiric ones http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gifi found using missile weapons works best as u can do damage from a good distance, try using a coupple of archers in your group, khalid is a good archer and i guess u could use imowen, i did for a while, try 2 find a good bow such as the bow of marksmenship or a +(whatever) bow and use a multitude of arrows, or use range spells with the mages with a coupple a paladins for close up work. trust me the games a gem when u get into it.

My guys are only lvl 2. Its pathetic that a couple of wolves can wipe out my party. Those damn Kobolds decimated my party too. I eventually kill em off but they would kill Xzar, Montaran, and maybe Kaigan. My party in BG2 eats dragons for breakfasts.

Darkman 08-30-2001 07:43 PM

Hey LSRVIKING you might want to find a good archer or two to join your party. They can take care of those pesky kobolds for you. There is an elven ranger named Kivan that you can find in the area south of the first wilderness area (the one you start out in). As for the wolves... if they're too tough for you, do like Ertai said and run away until you're bigger and stronger http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Vampiric wolf requires magic weapon to hit so let them live and you will live http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif (until you will lv4 and have magic weapons http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif, and mage with spells)
Before entering Nashkel mines clear all areas you are passing - and you will be lv3 for sure. I had never any problems with Nashkel mines, but every memeber of my party had ranged weapon (party in mines: me -generally crossbow, Minsc-bow , Branwen-sling, Ajantis-bow, Imoen-bow,Garrick-crossbow).

I'm sure you do this, but . . .

Party

Everyone has their favourites, but you can't go far wrong with:

-------Good---------------Evil
F------Khalid-------------Kagain
F------Kivan--------------Shar-Teel
F/T----Coran--------------Montaron
T------Imoen--------------Imoen/Safana
C------Branwen/Yeslic-----Viconia
M------Dyn/Xan/Imoen------Xzar/Edwin

Armour

If your guys are dying, it's because you're being hit. AC is not related to level, although it is related to available spending money. Designate 1 or 2 front-line fighters and pillage/buy/steal the best armour you can for them (early on this is plate-mail). If they are still getting hit, give them large shields for an extra AC bonus (they can still use bastard swords with shields for 2d4 vs. the 1d10 of 2-handed swords). If they don't have shields, give them bows. If they have shields, give them slings.

Attacking

The rest of the party has bows/slings as well. Unlike BGII, missile weapons are the best in BGI. (I don't even think there's an AC penalty for using missile weapons in melee, but I may be wrong).

When you bump into an enemy, target them with missile weapons and let them close the distance. This has the advantage of damaging them at no risk to yourselves (missile firing monsters are relatively rare) and of not uncovering their 18 buddies, allowing you to defeat in detail. When they get close enough, switch your 1/2 fighters to melee and charge.

If they do have missile weapons, you need to think. Either you can charge them with your fighters whilst your support troops missile away, or you all missile away. Me, I charge. Not just because I'm gung-ho, but also because it forces the enemy to target your low AC fighters (who may also be carry large shields for even more protection), but also because if you close with them they change to melee weapons (reducing the chance of hobgoblin poisoning).

The key advantage you have over the AI is the ability to think. Focus your attacks on one/a few enemies, thus improving the odds. The AI will continually plink away at the invulnerable fighters in your party (assuming they were at the front), which allows the weaker members (mages, thieves) to support from safety. Don't extend the same courtesy http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif .

Scouting

Use your F/T to scout the map stealthed. This allows you to prepare for your attacks, lure enemies towards your prepared party and avoid any that look too tough.

You can even kill entire parties of gibberlings etc. by targeting the nearest one at extreme range. You'll kill him, rehide and repeat on the others one by one. For single, tough creatures there's always the backstab.

Money

What money? You should have spent it all outfitting your guys http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif . I tend to hold off buying weaker magic weapons etc. that I'll just have to upgrade, but I do buy the long lasting stuff as soon as I can (the bow in the Feldepost in Beregost would be a good example).

Having said that, I'll buy magic shields/magic weapons for my fighters after a while to give me a chance if I do run into any vampiric wolves.

Thanx A lot. I didnt know vamp wolves needed magic weapons to hit. No wonder Im getting slaughtered, Yeah missile weapons do seem more effective in BG1. Right now my party is me, Kagain, Branwen, Montaran, Imoen, Xzar. Im gonna ditch imoen and get Kivan. Where can I find Viconia?
