Yes, you can.

You can backstab with any weapon that a thief can use.
Yes, even Clubs and Quarterstaves.

it doesnt work when i try. im invisble then i attack them and it does like 5 dmg. is there something special i gotta do like use thief button?

 that's funny - and you're quite sure you're standing BEHIND the guy you're attacking, correct?... the very first time I tried, I was standing at the enemy's SIDE, and that doesn't work. Also you need to get up RIGHT up close behind their back, not a few feet away. Disregard if you've already tried this (I don't want to insult your intelligence) but I myself forgot these things when I first tried to backstab so I thought I'd mention the bleeding obvious anyway ;)

You don't have to use any special button to actually do the backstab, just use the regular attack button.

Can you backstab with ANY weapon at all? If not, then something's not standard procedure here, who knows, it might be a bug...

You have to be invisibled or hidden in Shadows; and you have to be behind your target.

Imagine a single-class level 1 thief. Can s/he use the weapon you want to backstab with ??
If yes, you can backstab with it; if no, then no.

This is a correction of a bug in BGI that would allow ANY attack to count as a BackStab as long as the thief was "Hidden in Shadows" or Invisible when they attacked....even if they were standing right in front of the target!

I used Imoen to clear out a LOT of enemies this way all by herself. Send her ahead, checking for traps and then Hiding in Shadows when she spotted an enemy. Then walk up and STAB the guy for the BackStab multiplier. Very few opponents lasted more than 3 rounds and rarely even hit her.

In BGII, you actually have to stab the person in the back while being well hidden. I was disappointed at how much more difficult it was to BackStab in BGII, but it does reflect the actual rules more closely.

If a thief can use it WITHOUT 'Use Any Item' high level ability, then yes. For instance, if you use 'The Staff of the Magi' to try to 'backstab' (Considering 'Backwhack' would be more appropriate), it won't work, because theives can't use it.

Anything else, PM me. This is a very complicated matter. There are lots of rules!!!
