Since I'm using an evil party now I need to steal the golden statuette. Well the one guy standing there takes a walk but there are two guards that haven't moved. Every time I try to steal the thing they ring the alarm. Is there a way to steal it without them noticing me. I don't want to kill all of them. Yet.

Okay I couldn't wait so I took the statue, killed the two guards and went outside and killed the morning knights out there. Here's what upsets me. I didn't kill them initially because I thought my reputation would go down dramatically. It didn't, at all. However when you go to finish off a certain shadow thief and you use an area of affect spell and accidentally kill a bum nobody has seen in ten years the rep goes down 8 points.
Killing knights in broad daylight, perfectly acceptable.
Killing the bum that no one knows exists, major no-no.

I found (while looting the place ) that those gaurds aren't there at night. There is a wand of monster summoning in that temple, have fun

Welcome to the world of BG2. :D

On the same logic, a Lawful Good player can slaughter the whole Order of the Most Radiant Heart and still keep his Heroic reputation.

Whilst a Chaotic Evil player can slaughter a random person and their reputation will go down!!

It seems to be kind of arbitrary as to killing who will lower reputation. In the Planar Prison (Bard quest) I had webbed and cloudkilled the area where the Warden was to destroy his summons and disrupt his own spellcasting. After the battle was won, the spells were still going on, when the stupid little gnome from the beginning of the dungeon, Tagget, kamikazes himself on the cloudkill while running up to the party. No rep loss, though. You would have thought! So who knows?

There are usually devious ways to kill innocents without suffering a Rep loss.....my primary use of a certain Cloak in BG1 was to force annoying innocents (such as Ashen and Lord Binky the Buffoon) to join my party, so I could convince them of the glories of fighting Ogres. Pretty soon, they're off Tanking against Ogres for me, while I.....sit back and laugh. :D

Of course, in BG2, you can just gate in a Demon, but that's even more Evil.

I guess it's because there was no one to witness it, so no one knew.

Pretty inconsistant though because there wasn't anyone in Mae'var's basement either. Maybe since you're on another plane you don't lose rep.

In game engine terms, i think it may be a function of the killed person's class. You are almost always penalised reputation if you kill someone Class - Innocent. Of course, I may be wrong.
