i downloaded the SoA_Fixpack from the "All Newcomers..." thread, it's in a compressed folder, but i'm not sure how to install it.... help please!

Ok, most of those fixpacks are in a self-extracting archive. I imagine all you would have to do is to double-click it to open it and that should start the self-extractor. You will probably need to point it to either your game directory (like C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BG2-SoA) or your override directory (C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BG2-SoA\Override). It should tell you which one when you open it.
