Does one's mage has to be a specialist to summon a familiar???? I can't get Imoen or Nalia to summon any, the message says "only the protagonist can summon a familiar" or something!!!!! and if I get one, what is it good for??? doesn't it just get killed and lower my constitution????

Only PC's can summon a familiar. So none of the NPCs (Imoen, Edwin, Nalia, etc.) can.... Familiars ahve useful functions, depending on which one you get. One detects traps, another one pick pockets things. I don't know much about them, but maybe someone 'familiar' (hehe, bad pun there :D ) with them can tell you more.

Sodomatic Goat 11-15-2002 03:29 AM

oh I get it now, that sucks, then why would npc's even be able to get the find familiar spell written into their spellbooks, that's stupid.... aaaaarrrggghhh

Balhifet 11-15-2002 04:21 AM

Only the main char. can summon a familiar. It would be really neat if npcs can summon familiars too.

To stop your familiar from getting killed, click the Talk icon on it, and tell it to go into your backpack.
You get extra HP from having a familiar.

thats abaout all they are good for. they don't become better with levels, like in NWN.

Extra HP? (argh, brain freeze, just wrote a long post about Harry Potter on another forum, can't figure any other meaning for that right now!)

Just dont get it killed, or you loose the extra HP and a point of CON which usualy (but not always) loses you yet more HP. Keep it in the pack at all times, unless your using it for something specific. The ferret is the most useful from what I hear, but any of the theiveing ones can come in handy.

Really the ferret???
I always heard and read the Psuedo Dragon was the best.
You dont have to be a mage to get a familiar!!! Use the potion / scroll cheat to get a familiar for your paladin, cleric or theif or etc.

PS.
I think it was the potion / scroll cheat... :(

My conjurer is chaotic neutral and has a cat. It has 99% hide in shadows and move silently so it makes an excellent scout although it spends most of the time in my backback but it can be useful in some situations.
