Whatever happened to the "Has there been a question thread before?" thread?

Did no-one have a response to the last post?

It may have been archived... or it may have died a deserved death. Why have a frivolous nonsensical thread when you can have frivolous nonsensical threads about US politics?

After 239 pages of glorious questions and valiant efforts to derail it, the thread was allowed to die a quiet and passive death.

Doesn't mean there couldn't be another one, does it?

I'm barely in touch with English politics, and I live here. I don't stand a hope of mocking what the Americans have got going on.

So... Coalition government, eh?

Can I assume that you think the current UK government isn't all you may have been led to believe?

Oh yeah, we stuck parties together to try and make this place run.

To be honest, the government is never what I have been lead to believe. Plus they have just decided, after at some point promising they wouldn't, to up student tuition fees to a maximum of £9,000 per year.

Course, then we had the riot when people were unhappy about it, and eggs were thrown at members of the royal family... And then we had a couple of policemen seeing a man in a wheel chair who had cerebal palsy and was minding his own business, dragged him out of his chair and beat him up...

Fun times here.

If the government has never been what you were led to believe then it's time you changed your belief systems. It's not that I necessarily disagree with you, in fact I think it's highly likely that it's not what you were led to expect, and growing to realise that can be a shock. Just bear in mind that although you have spent a large portion of your life living under a New Labour government that this is not the same as if you had spent it under an "old" Labour goverment.

The original Labour movement was intended as a centre-left democratic socialist movement . New Labour, although simply a label and not an official party name, used the phrase "what counts is what works" and was simply a post-Thatcherite centre-right government hiding behind the name of "old" Labour.

So, Thatcher was there in the 80s, giving us grief; there was a brief respite, then Blair continued her work (Chicago School economics all round); Brown was falling apart on us for a brief period and now we have the Tories (essentially, with some LibDem fall-guys) getting ecstatic at the opportunity to bring in full shock-doctrine policies.
Now, if that's what you were led to believe, then you're spot on.

Now this conversation could go on for a while because, frankly, Labour as it used to be was no better - different, but no improvement.

So I'm off to get a cuppa and then I'll come back to this in a day or two...

p.s. whilst I'm away you could try reading this article and see if anything sounds familiar.

I have never paid attention to politics in my life before this year as, before this year, there was not a damn thing I could do to change it, because I was too young to vote.

Then, the year I am able to, I can't because I was too damn ill to go to the polling station, and I was in another city with no way to get back. Darn.
