Iraq agrees on new government after 8-month impasse

BAGHDAD — Iraq's squabbling politicians have agreed to return Shiite Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister, ending an eight-month deadlock that raised the specter of new sectarian violence.

The deal reached late Wednesday also reflects a significant victory for neighboring Iran, which had pushed for al-Maliki's return.
