Hiring veterans is right, and it's smart. They give our country more than we can ever repay, and they develop valuable skills along the way. To help keep veterans engaged in public service, President Obama created the Veterans Employment Initiative for the Federal government last November.

I'm sorry, but as a good capitalist I am wholly against hiring a veteran just because they are a vet. And I would hope they wouldn't want such unseemly charity.

Now, do vets get great training? Work under stress situations? Have to meet the strictest of deadlines in the deadliest of situations? Yes.

All of those are meritorious reasons to hire someone. But "status" as "vet" is no reason to hire someone, just as status as "black" or "jew" or "whatever" is no reason to hire someone.
