European Football (a question)
How many games are played during a common european football season in the various leagues? And how many season or career ending injuries typically occur?
The reason I ask is in the American NFL league (not the soccer type) is the owners want to expand to an 18 game season. |
Re: European Football (a question)
18 game a season? That is short..
Let's just say an english club has been very successful for the season. So on top of my head.. 1+6+6+38+10+1+1= 63 matches (give or take) 1 match charity shield 6 match League Cup 6 match FA cup. 38 match Premier league 10 match Champions League 1 match UEFA Super Cup 1 match Intercontinental Cup This still doesn't add the various preseason friendlies or competitions. I'm not sure about other leagues because the sport channels tend to show english league mostly. Edit : Carrier ending injuries? I don't remember any atm sorry. |

:) In 1979/80 Arsenal played 70+ competetive matches in one season using only 15 players. Brian Talbot played every minute of every match. |

lol well my thinking was with all the running in football there might be a lot of knee injuries. American football has a lot of knee and other injuries. Maybe because the game is played in "bursts" (plays) where one goes all-out. I think the players have a valid point, another 2 real games will up the injuries. Especially at the end of the season. And I played soccer when I was in my teens :P Oops I said soccer! I have to say we were damn good and often won by large margins. And nobody, and I mean nobody got by the left halfback (LoA!!!!) While I dont really follow it, I do root Arsenal! You are a bad influence. |
Re: European Football (a question)
Our league has 18 teams, so that's 17 home and 17 away matches=34 total. In adition there's the cupmatches, so that could add a total of 6-7 matches depending on how far u get, and the topteams also play in the European cups, so that's another handful, also depending on how far u get. Injuries mostly occur at the end of a season, but are rarely careerending, at best they be sidelined for a few months. there are of course exeptions.

Wouldn't rugby be a better comparison?

Both being intense contact sport. Australian rugby league -regarded as the best 'domestic' league for rugby has 26 regular matches plus up to another 5 depending if your team does well in the knockout competition. They are talking about upping that to 28 matches (+5). |
